Is a common stomach ache serious and should I see a doctor?
Abdominal pain without apparent cause is usually not serious and could resolve on its own, but can also persist for quite some time. When symptoms change it can be important to contact a doctor. When the symptoms change suddenly, it can be important to contact a doctor.
Immediately contact a doctor:
- Blood in the stool
- Vomiting blood
- No urination for over 12 hours
- Pregnancy and abdominal pain
- Pain radiating towards the chest and shoulders
- Abdominal pain that gets worse
What can I do about a common stomach ache myself?
- Avoid foods or drinks that aggravate the symptoms
- Eat enough fibre
- Drink half a gallon or 2 litres of water each day
- Try to eat 4 or 5 small meals each day, instead of 3 large meals
How does a common stomach ache affect my body?
A common stomach ache is hard to treat, because it’s unclear what to treat. Abdominal pain caused by stress doesn’t fit in this category because the cause there is clear and it can be treated succesfully. The most important thing to do is to be alert to any changes in the symptoms and to know when to contact a doctor.
