How does reflux affect my body?

With reflux gastric acid goes outside the stomach, back into the esophagus. The stomach produces very caustic acid to break down your food, so it can be digested. To protect the stomach from this acid it has a protective lining, the esophagus doesn’t have such a protective lining. When gastric acid enters the esophagus it irritates the lining of the esophagus. This causes a nagging pain and a bloated feeling.

In general there are two types of drugs used for treating reflux: antacids and drugs that decrease the production of gastric acid. Antacid neutralize the acid and are over the counter drugs, often available at drug stores and supermarkets.
